Uncle Mike and Uncle Dennis

Today I went to Uncle Mike and Uncle Dennis's house while my moms did some errands. I figured out pretty quickly that Uncle Dennis makes a great pillow. (My moms and Uncle Mike call him "the baby whisperer" because he is soooo good at making me happy). [JUMP TO FULL POST]

Visiting

Today I went to visit my Mommy's work- I saw Dennis, Cindy, Jiema, Lori, Yoo Mi, Courtney and Emily. Cindy calmed me down and rocked me to sleep and I showed off my handsome blue eyes and my cute outfit for everyone else.

Then I got tired and we went home... [JUMP TO FULL POST]

Slingin' it

This is my new sling- my Mama got it at Kangaroo Korner. I LOVE it- sometimes it is the only thing that will calm me down when I am fussy, and as you can see I also like to stay snuggled up in my sling even when my moms aren't wearing it- it is very cozy. [JUMP TO FULL POST]

One month check-up

As you can see I am very tired, and not feeling like getting my picture taken right now. Today I went to the doctor for my 1 month check-up (even though I am actually 5 weeks old). The doctor said that I am a handsome guy and that everything looks great. I am 10 pounds, 2 ounces now and 22 3/4 inches long. The doctor said that I had really good weight gain for the past 3 weeks. According to the growth charts I am tall and lean. I wanted to show off all my talents so while my diaper was off, so that I could be weighed and measured, I showed everyone how far I could pee. I am sure they were very impressed. The nurse then punished me by sticking a piece of sharp metal into my thigh- something about a hepatitis vaccine- booo. Posted by Picasa [JUMP TO FULL POST]

My First Plane Ticket

My first plane tickets arrived in the mail today. We're going to Thailand for my second-cousin's wedding reception this summer. I can't wait, but I hope my mommies know what they are getting into, taking me halfway across the world when I am about 6 months old!! [JUMP TO FULL POST]

TGIF

Today I got to meet my new friend Henry in person. I heard alot about him because our families know each other because his dad Nathan works with my mama. (you should hear some of mama's stories about Nathan...) Anyway, Henry's pretty cool- he was very interested in me and had lots of questions about why I do what I do (like cry, hang out in a sling, etc.) He even let his mommy carry me around for a few minutes. I'm not sure he thought it was the best idea his mom has ever had, but he was a gentleman about it. I got a little hungry anyway, so I was okay with being fed a bottle by mama instead.

Henry is a "big kid"- he will be three this year (or so I am told, but my mommy is not that good at math). But his mommy told me that when he ws born he was about my size. Wow. I can't wait until I am big enough can do cool things like he does. Just this morning he went to the zoo and hung out with some orangutans. Lucky kid!! (I don't know if he noticed, but he and his mommy and I and my mama were all wearing courderoy pants. Coincidence? I think not. We didn't completely coordinate- he was in stripes and I had on plaid, but what can you do??) [JUMP TO FULL POST]

Boppys and Bjorns

I don't really like to ever be put down. The pictures above are from a very rare occurance when I let my Mommy put me down for a few minutes in my Boppy. The rest of the time she has to carry me around or I am very, very fussy. The Baby Bjorn has been a lifesaver, and Mama recently ordered some slings, so when they get here we'll test them out and see if I like them as much as I like the Bjorn. Andrea and Heather came to visit me today and they brought my Mommy some lunch. They thought I was adorable, but then again who wouldn't? :) [JUMP TO FULL POST]

Little hands and feet

My Aunt Kallie sent me a very cool memory kit so my moms stuck my little hands and feet into this funny foam/clay like stuff. I was fairly good for the process and only wiggled a little bit. My Mama says that my feet are exactly like Mommy's. Mommy doesn't think that that is such an awful thing. Posted by Picasa [JUMP TO FULL POST]

Quiet as a Church Mouse

Today I made my first appearance in Church (check out my spiffy new duds). My mommies were a bit nervous as I was quite cranky when they first put me in my car seat (see the picture above- I have a good set of lungs!), but as soon as I was swinging along in the carseat I conked out and spent the rest of the time in church and then at brunch afterwards snoring away. I haven't decided what religion if any I am going to be, but for now I think I'll keep going to the Episcopal Church with my moms. The one we go to is very welcoming to families like mine and it is really close to our house- so if we aren't running late we could probably walk there. Posted by Picasa [JUMP TO FULL POST]

The Hilbers

Today Jeremy and Ira got to meet me! They're great (and were very patient because my Poppy happened to be here at the same time, and you know no one can come between me and my Poppy - so they had to see me from afar for most of the time - but they did get to hold me for a few minutes after he left). They're great guys- i hope they have their own kid soon so I can play with him or her (or them).

Things are changing around here. I am starting to spend alot more time with my eyes open, and also just being awake and not eating or being fussy. I also am getting much better at holding my own head up. I can't do it all the time, but I'm getting there. [JUMP TO FULL POST]

Gus's First Advocacy Piece

(Note: this blog is about me, Gus, and my life. So mostly you'll get cute pictures and updates on what I've been up to lately. It's not a political soapbox, nor do I intend, hope, or expect it to become primarily a forum for commentary on politics or current events. So my loyal readers who come searching for photos, don't fear, this post isn't the norm. But sometimes things happen in our communities that affect me or families like mine, so I think they're worth mentioning.)

I don't really think much about politics, being a newborn baby and all, but I saw this and it upset me even more than having my diaper changed. As some of you who might read this may live in Virginia, I thought I'd post it. A bill like the one described below that was proposed in Virginia by Del Bob Marshall would mean doctors couldnt help two loving moms like mine conceive cute little guys like me - people! I wouldn't be here!!!! (Not to mention the impact it would have on all kinds of other families, gay or straight, who don't want to or aren't allowed to get married.)

Having failed to convince his colleagues in the General Assembly to ban gay and lesbian adoption by co-patroning Del. Black’s adoption bill last year, Bob Marshall now proposes to ensure that child bearing is limited to women who are married. He's introduced a bill, HB 187, that would prohibit doctors and other licensed health professionals from assisting unmarried women with becoming pregnant. This would preclude lesbian couples from becoming a family through artifical insemination, gay couples from becoming a family through surrogacy, unless the surrogate was married, and would even prevent a widow from being inseminated with her dead husband's sperm or their embryos. One cannot presume all the various circumstances that might lead an unmarried woman using in vitro or in vivo fertilization. A deceased husband may have "banked" his sperm or embryos before starting medical treatments, a soldier may want to ensure that he will be able to have children even if killed in combat, and infertile couple may seek a surrogate to bear their child. This is another direct attack on all families in Virginia.

From what I hear, this guy is generally a right-wing zealot who wants to mess around in people's personal lives alot, so hopefully the rest of the General Assembly wont agree with him. You can email him giving him your thoughts on HB 187 at Del_BMarshall@house.state.va.us If you live in Virginia and want to contact your legislator directly, you can find his or her contact info using this link http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform .

I'm Three Weeks Old Today!!!

Can you believe it?

My moms think I have already gotten bigger. I can wear some things that were way to big for me before, and I just generally look, well, bigger. Anyhoo, here are some things I've learned in the past 3 weeks..

it would be cool to be a kangaroo

I can do the KISS face!
